Heavy rains trigger floods in India
Monsoon downpours kill, displace and damage crops
Heavy rains have caused severe flooding across various regions in India, leading to significant disruptions and damage. In northeastern Imphal, drone footage revealed the Iril river overflowing its banks, devastating nearby villages. In Mumbai, a monorail malfunctioned, stranding at least 17 passengers for hours. The industrial city of Kanpur also faced inundation, with local residents reporting substantial financial losses and food shortages.
The monsoon season, crucial for India's economy, typically provides around 70% of the necessary rainfall for agriculture. However, the recent excessive rainfall has resulted in frequent flooding, impacting numerous states. In Nashik district, Maharashtra, heavy downpours caused rivers and streams to overflow, isolating over ten villages. Tragically, one person lost their life, while two others were swept away by swift waters. Local volunteers and disaster response teams rescued 159 residents from flooded homes.
In Karnataka's Kalaburagi district, continuous rainfall led to the overflow of a local stream, flooding homes and destroying food supplies, displacing hundreds. Affected individuals have been relocated to temporary shelters, and the district administration has initiated damage assessments and relief operations to provide food, clean water, and medical aid.
Guntur city in Andhra Pradesh experienced a cloudburst that dumped around 90 mm of rain in just over three hours, submerging major roads and halting traffic. Residents were advised to remain indoors and boil water due to contamination concerns.
In the Aland taluk region of Kalaburagi, flooding from Gogamwadi lake devastated villages, destroying thousands of acres of crops, including sugarcane. Key infrastructure, such as bridges and roads, was severely damaged, isolating several communities and disrupting electricity supply.
Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir, remote mountain villages are grappling with the aftermath of flash floods and cloudbursts. In Kishtwar district, a cloudburst swept away a community kitchen and several homes, resulting in numerous casualties. Rescue operations are ongoing but face challenges due to difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions.
