Venezuela shuts borders before elections
Venezuela has temporarily closed its borders with neighboring countries, including Colombia, as part of security measures ahead of regional and parliamentary elections. The border shutdown, ordered by the Defense Ministry and the Ministry of Interior Relations, began at 12:01 a.m. on May 23 and will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. on May 26. Travelers were seen waiting at the Colombia-Venezuela border bridge in Cucuta, some unaware of the closure.
This closure is part of Venezuela's standard protocol during elections, with border crossings expected to reopen after the vote count. In addition to the border closure, the government has suspended all flights from Colombia, following the arrest of 38 individuals, including 17 foreign nationals, accused of participating in an alleged anti-government conspiracy involving terrorism and explosives. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello cited national security concerns as the reason for the flight suspension.
President Nicolás Maduro has claimed that the conspiracy involves foreign actors, including an "Albanian-Colombian mafia" allegedly sending mercenaries from Ecuador, escalating tensions with Colombia. The border closure significantly impacts the estimated three million Venezuelans living in Colombia, disrupting familial and economic ties and exacerbating the humanitarian situation for communities reliant on cross-border movement.
These developments occur amid ongoing political repression in Venezuela, with reports of extrajudicial killings, disappearances, and arbitrary arrests following the disputed July 2024 presidential election. Opposition figures, including María Corina Machado, have called for a boycott of the upcoming elections, citing concerns over electoral fairness and government crackdowns on dissent. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with human rights organizations and foreign governments expressing concern over the Venezuelan government's actions and their implications for regional stability.
