Russia, North Korea boost ties with direct flights

Russia's natural resources minister visited North Korea, marking a significant step in trade and technology cooperation between the two nations. This visit was facilitated by the first flight of a resumed direct air route from Moscow to Pyongyang, a connection that had not been operational since the mid-1990s. During the meeting in Pyongyang, North Korea's external economic relations minister and Russia's minister discussed the implementation of a protocol signed by their intergovernmental committee last November.

The meeting included working-level discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation across various sectors, alongside a welcoming reception hosted by North Korea's ministry. The inaugural flight, operated by Nordwind Airlines, carried over 400 passengers and is set to operate once a month initially, with plans for more frequent service depending on demand. This resumption of direct flights is seen as a clear indication of the strengthening bilateral ties, with both ministers expressing optimism about future collaboration.

The flight from Sheremetyevo Airport to Pyongyang takes approximately eight hours and reflects a broader trend of increasing cooperation between Russia and North Korea, including a mutual defense pact and military support. This new air route is part of a larger strategy that includes the recent restart of passenger rail services between the two capitals and aligns with North Korea's efforts to reopen tourism amid ongoing sanctions.

Despite its symbolic importance, the air route's current operations are limited, with plans for expansion contingent on demand. The developments underscore a growing geopolitical alignment between Russia and North Korea, influenced by agreements such as the recent treaty on comprehensive strategic partnership. This evolving relationship is viewed as a strategic move by Moscow to enhance its influence in the region.
