Authorities struggle to identify victims amid severe damage

Iran reports over 3,000 war deaths

Iran’s Forensic Medicine Organization reports that more than 3,000 people have been killed in the country since the conflict began, with roughly 40% of bodies initially unidentifiable due to the nature of the attacks, officials said. Authorities are working to identify victims and return remains to families, drawing on the organization’s capabilities and lessons learned from prior hostilities to accelerate forensic processes.

According to Jamaran, citing ILNA, Masjedi, the forensic chief, offered condolences for officials and civilians lost in the fighting and said the judiciary has mobilized services to support identification efforts. While many remains were severely damaged, officials said forensic teams have succeeded in identifying a substantial number and handing them over to relatives as quickly as possible.

The announcement underscores the heavy human toll of the war and the challenges facing authorities in documenting casualties amid ongoing hostilities. The high proportion of initially unidentifiable bodies highlights the destructive force used in attacks on populated areas, complicating recovery, identification and bereavement for families and communities across the country.
