Ethiopia marks 130 years since Adwa
Thousands honor historic victory over Italy
Thousands gathered in Addis Ababa and in the historic town of Adwa to mark the 130th anniversary of Ethiopia’s victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa, a landmark event that preserved the country’s independence during the late 19th-century scramble for Africa. The nationwide commemorations featured large public gatherings, parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and military honors recognizing the forces led by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul. Cultural programs included traditional dances, poetry recitals and exhibitions of battle-related artifacts, while schools held educational forums spotlighting how soldiers from diverse regions united to repel a better-armed colonial army.
Historians on panel discussions emphasized Adwa’s enduring symbolism as a beacon of anti-colonial resistance across Africa and the diaspora, and government officials framed the victory as foundational to modern Ethiopian statehood and its diplomatic standing with European powers. Religious leaders of different faiths took part in interfaith prayers; Ethiopian Orthodox clergy held services that recalled the spiritual aspects of pre-battle mobilization. The ceremonial presence of military units in historic dress linked past defense efforts to today’s national institutions.
Organizers and officials used the anniversary to urge unity and reconciliation amid ongoing political challenges and economic recovery efforts, drawing parallels between the solidarity demonstrated at Adwa and the cohesion needed to address current national issues. Representatives from regional bodies and international observers acknowledged the rarity and significance of an African army decisively defeating a European colonial power in that era. The commemorations closed with fireworks and patriotic songs in the capital, as many attendees described the events as both historical remembrance and a reaffirmation of sovereignty, resilience and national pride rooted in one of the continent’s most consequential military victories.
