Tiger Woods steps back after DUI

Tiger Woods said he is stepping away from competition to seek treatment and focus on his health after pleading not guilty to a DUI charge related to a recent rollover crash near his Jupiter Island home. Court records show he has requested a jury trial and his next appearance is scheduled for May 5; he is not required to appear in person before the trial.

Woods, a 15-time major champion, was arrested after his Land Rover overturned on a two-lane road and was released on bail. In a social media post, he acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, said he is taking time to prioritize well-being and lasting recovery, and requested privacy. Augusta National confirmed Woods will not attend the year’s first major; the club expressed support as he focuses on his health.

A probable-cause affidavit reported that Woods told authorities he had been looking down at his phone and changing the radio when the vehicle ahead slowed. Officers noted he appeared lethargic, sweating profusely, with bloodshot eyes and extremely dilated pupils; two hydrocodone pills were found in his pocket. Woods told investigators he takes “a few” prescription medications and has had multiple prior surgeries, including seven back operations and more than 20 procedures on his leg. A deputy described him as limping and stumbling and said field sobriety tests indicated impaired faculties.

Woods recently returned to competition after missing the British Open cut in 2024 and took part in the TGL Finals, an indoor team event that reduces walking demands. He had been preparing for the Masters but will not be present; Augusta National said his presence will be felt and voiced support for his recovery.

The announcement has drawn broad attention across the sports world, with fans and fellow players offering support and stressing the need to prioritize long-term health. Medical observers note recovery timelines depend on treatment specifics and individual circumstances. Speculation continues about Woods’ future return to competitive golf, but his team and supporters emphasize the immediate focus is on treatment, rehabilitation and regaining health.
