Smoke seen over diplomatic quarter amid regional strikes

Blast reported near U.S. embassy in Riyadh

A loud blast was heard and flames were seen at the U.S. embassy in Riyadh, three people familiar with the matter said, with one person saying the fire was minor.

Black smoke was seen rising over Riyadh's Diplomatic Quarter, which houses foreign missions, two of the people said.

Initial reports from local sources suggested that a loud explosion was heard in the vicinity of the Diplomatic Quarter, a high-security district that houses numerous foreign embassies and government facilities. However, there has been no confirmed information regarding casualties, structural damage, or the precise origin of the sound. Emergency services were reportedly observed moving toward the area, though such deployments are common following any reported security alert.

The U.S. Embassy compound in Riyadh operates under strict security protocols, including controlled access points and reinforced infrastructure designed to withstand potential threats. Any confirmed explosion within or near the facility would likely trigger coordinated responses between Saudi security forces and American diplomatic security personnel.

At the center of the crisis is a series of air and missile strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, including strategic sites in Tehran and other cities, in an effort officials describe as degrading Iran’s missile capabilities and regime infrastructure.

In response to U.S.–Israeli strikes, Iran has launched extensive missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. military installations in the Persian Gulf region, including bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Iran’s counter-attacks have caused civilian casualties and infrastructure damage, prompting broad evacuations and travel advisories from multiple governments across the Middle East.
