Barcelona tax workers strike over staffing
Workers demand more staff and better conditions
Workers at the State Tax Administration Agency (AEAT) in Barcelona held a one‑hour rally as part of a nationwide strike by the Independent Trade Union and Civil Servants’ Federation (CSIF), pressing for better working conditions and more staff. Protesters gathered outside government offices with banners and union flags, denouncing years of understaffing, rising administrative demands, and mounting pressure on employees who handle tax administration and public services. Unions say heavier workloads and longer hours have increased stress, reduced service quality, and made it harder to maintain timely responses for taxpayers.
Staffers demanded increased recruitment, greater investment in public‑sector resources, and measures to manage workloads created by increasingly complex digital systems and compliance duties. Demonstrators also called for pay rises and clearer career progression to retain experienced personnel and attract new hires. Labor organizations warned that persistent staffing shortfalls could delay processing of tax filings, audits and inquiries, undermining the effectiveness of tax collection and citizen services.
Government officials acknowledged the protest and said discussions with union representatives are ongoing, while highlighting parallel efforts to modernize the tax administration and improve operational efficiency. Union leaders cautioned that further industrial action could follow if negotiations do not secure concrete commitments on staffing, workload management and employee welfare. The dispute underscores wider concerns across Spain about budget constraints, the capacity of public services, and the need for sustained investment to ensure efficient administration.
